Ex-Tennessee PG Trae Golden will receive waiver to play at Georgia Tech this season, per report

The senior point guard heads home and could be a factor for the Yellow Jackets.

Trae Golden has been granted a waiver to immediately play at Georgia Tech after leaving Tennessee, reports ESPN's Jeff Goodman. Golden left Tennessee in order to be closer to family after his father became "severely ill."

From the Rumble Seat: Yellow Jackets scrimmage news

Golden announced he would be leaving the program in May, leading to speculation there was a fallout between Vols coach Cuonzo Martin and the player because of his shoot-first style of play or because of academic issues. Golden clarified he is still on track to receive his degree after transferring, despite rumors:

“I know there were some rumors,” Golden said. “That’s not something I can control, but I’m on track to be the second person in my family to get their degree.”

The Georgia native saw his productivity drop last season, averaging 12.1 points on 38 percent shooting (29.5 percent from beyond the arc) and 3.9 assists per game -- all lower than his sophomore year with the Volunteers. Most notable from his junior campaign was a 32-point outburst in a four-overtime victory against Texas A&M.
