Cliff Alexander recruiting: Chicago star trims list to five

Illinois, DePaul, Michigan State, Kansas and Memphis all made the cut for one of the top prospects of the class of 2014.

Cliff Alexander narrowed down his list of schools to Illinois, DePaul, Michigan State, Kansas and Memphis on Monday.

Alexander, a 6’8 forward from Chicago, is ranked as the No. 4 prospect in the class of 2014 by Rivals, No. 3 by ESPN and No. 3 by 247Sports.

The high school star previously dropped some big names off his top 10 list towards the end of September, with Kentucky, Baylor, Indiana and Louisville missing the cut. This time around, Alexander went from six schools to five and the Arizona Wildcats were left holding the short end of the stick.

Alexander has already made his official visits to Arizona, DePaul and Kansas. He was hanging out in Kansas on Oct. 4 for Late Night in the Phog. He has official visits scheduled with Memphis on Oct. 18 and Illinois on Oct. 26, and might make an unofficial visit with Michigan State.

The local pull is helping keep DePaul in the running amongst the elite company in the running for Alexander’s services. Alexander told ESPNChicago.com he is interested in playing in-state, and likes the idea of playing with some of the former Chicago Public League players on DePaul’s team.

“I love [DePaul] coach Oliver Purnell,” Alexander said. “He’s a great guy. He’s built a great relationship with my mom. We had a fun time. I’m really considering them. It helps a lot playing with Tommy, Myke, Billy and Rashaun. I know those guys.”

Alexander plans on committing in December and signing a letter of intent in the spring. The regular period for national letters of intent for basketball begins on April 16, 2014.
