North Carolina holds out P.J. Hairston, 2 others in exhibition game

Senior Leslie McDonald and sophomore J.P. Tokoto joined Hairston in sitting, all three dealing with eligibility issues.

The drama surrounding North Carolina guard P.J. Hairston continues for the Tar Heels, as he and two of his teammates sat out Friday's exhibition against UNC Pembroke, ESPN.com's C.L. Brown reports. All three were held out because of pending eligibility issues.

Hairston had a busy summer in all of the wrong ways, driving a car rented by an ex-convict and getting popped going 93 in a 65 mph zone. Hairston and fellow junior James Michael McAdoo are the leading returning scorers on the team, and they represent UNC's best chance at reaching its first Final Four since 2009.

Head coach Roy Williams has been vocal about leaving Hairston’s fate in the hands of the NCAA, which should have a ruling around the Nov. 8 start of the season. This is typical of Williams, who has one of the cleanest records of any successful college coach in recent memory.

Tokoto, who played in a pair of unsanctioned summer league games, will return from his rules violation for the regular-season opener against Oakland.
