N.C. State’s Jordan Vandenberg will miss at least 1 month with ankle sprain

After losing one of the few experienced players on the roster, the Wolfpack will have to enter the season down a big man.

USA TODAY Sports

Senior center Jordan Vandenberg will be out 4-6 weeks with an ankle sprain, according N.C. State's team website. The official diagnosis is a Grade 3 sprain, suffered in the first half an exhibition win over UNC Pembroke.

At 7’1, Vandenberg is the tallest member of the Wolfpack’s frontcourt. Appearing in 23 of 35 games last season, the Australian’s minutes dipped to just 5.4 per game. He still managed to hit half of his field goal attempts, but couldn’t improve on the 11-plus minutes per game he was averaging before a shoulder injury cost him his true junior season.

Vandenberg is entering his fifth season with the team, having been granted a medical redshirt after the injury. He started the game against Pembroke and was expected to start when the season opens next week. Going forward, the Wolfpack will take a look at three of its incoming freshmen to fill time down low: Kyle Washington, Lennard Freeman and BeeJay Anya.

N.C. State tips-off its season at home on Nov. 8 against Appalachian State.
