VCU vs. Virginia final score: Rams survive Cavaliers’ upset bid, 59-56

Treveon Graham hit a three in the waning seconds to provide the win for the VCU Rams.

Geoff Burke-USA TODAY Sports

The VCU Rams needed every bit of Treveon Graham's big night as they held off the Virginia Cavaliers, 59-56, on Tuesday night.

Malcolm Brogdon made one of his two free throws to tie the game at 56, but Graham came back down the court and hit the game winning three pointer with three seconds left to give the Rams the win in the in-state grudge match.

The defensive billing between the two teams lived up to the hype. Both teams combined to shoot approximately 40 percent, and the Rams’ aggressive defense threw the Cavaliers into an offensive funk. Virginia ended the game with more turnovers (20) than field goals (18).

Graham led all scorers with 22 points, and his big game kept the Rams in it. No other VCU player finished with double-digit points.

Joe Harris led the Cavaliers with 18 points and Malcolm Brogdon finished with 10 points, but lost chances at the free throw line hurt Virginia. The Cavaliers shot 57 percent from the free throw line, going 19-for-33.
