Hawaii women’s basketball team lost to West Virginia 59-56 Sunday night, but the story of the day was instead a brawl that lasted several minutes and left Hawaii athletic director Ben Jay injured on the court.
Hawaii AD hurt in brawl during West Virginia basketball game
A melee between fans left Hawaii’s athletic director injured on the court for 20 minutes.

The fight took place between fans behind the West Virginia bench, as multiple Mountaineer fans and at least one Hawaii fan were involved in the brawl, via the Star Advertiser. Athletic director Jay attempted to stop the fight, and he was hurt in the scuffle.
Jay appeared to try to intervene and emerged from the fracas a few minutes later holding his face. He lay kneeling close to the center court “H” for more than 10 minutes while people attended to him.
Jay received treatment on the court and reportedly walked off the floor 20 minutes later under his own power, telling reporters his back “spasmed up.”
West Virginia’s coach told the Star Advertiser a fan was heckling the entire game who tried to grab one of the Mountaineer assistant coaches, and that’s what started the fracas.
