College basketball schedule: Iowa State and BYU are the cream of the crop

Only a few of the Top 25 teams will see the court on Tuesday, with Iowa State’s first game as a ranked team in awhile coming on the road.

Reese Strickland-USA TODAY Sports

A handful of Top 25 teams will hit the court on Wednesday and are complemented by a few more early season tournaments.

Top 25 teams in action

American University vs. No. 8 Ohio State, Big Ten Network (7:30 p.m. ET)

The Buckeyes are coming off one of their best defensive performances in recent memory after shutting down the Marquette Golden Eagles, 53-35, in their last game. It ended Marquette's home winning streak, the longest in the nation, at 27. For the offensively challenged Eagles, Ohio State isn't the way to get the offense jumpstarted. American averages 57.8 points per game, landing them ranked 335th in the nation.

No. 14 Wichita State vs. Tulsa, CBS Sports Network (8 p.m. ET)

Wichita State has had troubles starting games this season, and against Tulsa that might end up being a problem. Although it hasn’t cost the Shockers a win yet, Tulsa holds opponents to under forty percent shooting in the first half this season. The Shockers have been a second half team through their first four games, ending with an even first half scoring margin of 96-96 so far.

Charleston Southern vs. No. 20 Baylor (7 p.m. ET)

The Baylor Bears have one more tune-up game before heading off to the Maui Invitational to potentially face Gonzaga or Syracuse. It'll be nice to shake the cobwebs off as the Bears struggled a bit with their shot in the first two games of the season. They rebounded nicely from barely beating the South Carolina Gamecocks with a season-high 87 points against Louisiana Lafayette. Charleston Southern will surprisingly test the Baylor defense, which has held opponents to 34.4 percent shooting. Charleston Southern is averaging near 88 points a game, good for 29th in the nation.

No. 21 Iowa State vs. BYU, ESPNU/WatchESPN (9:30 p.m. ET)

The Cyclones drew a stiff test as they play their first game in two seasons as a ranked team. Iowa State hopped into the rankings after beating then No. 7 Michigan on Sunday, and they'll face just as tough of a test against an undefeated team in an arena few visiting teams win at. BYU is averaging 96.3 points and 50 percent shooting this season, and also might have guard Tyler Haws back from injury.

Other games to watch

Lehigh vs. Pittsburgh, ESPNU/WatchESPN (7:30 p.m. ET)

The Panthers are coming off a dominating win over Howard as they play their second game in the Pittsburgh Regional of the Progressive Legends Classic.

Campbell vs. Cincinnati, ESPN3 (7 p.m. ET)

The Global Sports Shootout isn’t so much a tournament as it is a round-robin affair, but Cincinnati is the best team partaking in the whole thing.
