Duke vs. Vermont final score: No. 6 Blue Devils outlast Catamounts, 91-90

Rodney Hood’s free throw in the final seconds helped Duke avoid a huge upset.

Mark Dolejs-USA TODAY Sports

The No. 6 Duke Blue Devils found themselves in a dog fight against the Vermont Catamounts on Sunday, but the Blue Devils pulled out a tough 91-90 victory. Rodney Hood split a pair of free throws in the final seconds to give Duke the win.

Vermont led by three late in the second half, and the game was tied with just under two minutes to go before Quinn Cook's three-pointer put Duke ahead. When it looked like the Catamounts were just about finished, Candon Rusin completed a four-point play to tie the game with 10 seconds left before Hood's free throw won it:

Blue Devils stud freshman Jabari Parker put on yet another show, scoring 26 points on 11-of-16 shooting and grabbing nine rebounds. Parker was dominant down the stretch, scoring 19 points in the second half and making numerous clutch baskets. Hood added 22 points for Duke, while Andre Dawkins had 16 points off the bench.

Duke pulled out the win despite Vermont shooting a scorching 64.8 percent from the field. The Blue Devils weren’t too shabby in their own right, knocking down 49.1 percent of their shots and 10-of-27 from three-point land. Duke’s offense helped them run out to a 15-point lead in the first half, but their inability to stop Vermont almost led to an upset.

Hector Harold had 24 points on 9-of-13 shooting off the bench to lead Vermont. Clancy Rugg had 20 points on 9-of-11 shooting, and Sandro Carissimo chipped in 16 points.

Duke moved to 5-1 on the young season, while Vermont fell to 1-5.
