Iowa vs. Iowa State final score: Cyclones rally past Hawkeyes, 85-82

Missed free throws allowed Iowa State to come back against their in-state rivals.

Reese Strickland-USA TODAY Sports

Taking advantage of a trio of missed free throws by Iowa, Iowa State won the battle for the Hawkeye State, 85-82. Down seven at the half, the Cyclones needed 24 points from Georges Niang to rally past their in-state rivals. The Hawkeyes haven't won in Ames since March 2003.

Down seven at the half, Iowa State got a jolt in production in the latter period from Niang and Melvin Ejim. Ejim scored 13 of his 22 points in the second half, including a pair of free throws in the final minute. Niang hit the game-winner, laying the ball in with 20 seconds left to give the Cyclones a one-point lead.

But it was Iowa’s missed free throws that sealed the Hawkeyes’ fate, as the team missed three in the final minute. Despite the misses, Iowa had a chance to tie the game in regulation, but Zach McCabe’s three-point attempt rattled out.

The win preserves Iowa State’s prefect record, and hands Iowa its second loss of the young season. The Cyclones have George Mason and Northern Illinois to close out the calendar year.
