Arizona vs. Michigan final score: No. 1 Wildcats squeak by to stay undefeated

The Wolverines gave the top-ranked team in the country all they had, but came up just short.

Rick Osentoski-USA TODAY Sports

The No. 1 Arizona Wildcats took the Michigan Wolverines' best shot, but the undefeated Wildcats eked by with a 72-70 win on the road in Ann Arbor on Saturday.

The Wildcats were down by as much as 11 and trailed by a decent margin for most of the second half, but Brandon Ashley and star freshman Aaron Gordon led Arizona to a furious comeback. Ashley made tough shot after tough shot, scoring six of his 18 points in the last five minutes and change, including a bucket that put the Wildcats ahead with just over a minute to play.

For Michigan, Glenn Robinson III was huge in building their lead, scoring a game-high 20 points and shooting 8-for-9 from the field. The Wolverines needed more from sophomore Mitch McGary, who took just three shots and finished with only eight points and four rebounds. Michigan lost the rebounding battle, 37-24.

With the loss, Michigan falls to 6-3 on the year and slides even farther away from the Top 25 in the rankings. For a team that was projected to be one of the country’s top squads, the performance was encouraging but the results disheartening.

Arizona moves to 10-0 with what was probably their best win of the year. This was a big resume booster for when seeding for the NCAA Tournament comes around.
