Villanova vs. La Salle final score: Wildcats beat-up intracity rival Explorers

The No. 10 Wildcats made easy work of La Salle Sunday afternoon.

Tommy Gilligan-USA TODAY Sports

The No. 10 Villanova Wildcats got a big win in a Big 5 matchup, beating fellow Philadelphia school La Salle, 73-52.

The Wildcats moved to 10-0 on the year and have now won games against three of the other four Big 5 schools after beating Penn and St. Joseph’s earlier this year. La Salle kept this one close in the first half, but the team that made the 2013 Sweet Sixteen fell to a disappointing 5-5.

Jerrell Wright, La Salle's best player, scored 20 points, but only two in the second half as the Wildcats pulled away. It took La Salle almost five minutes to hit its first field goal in the second half, and by the time they did, the game was already getting out of hand. Villanova was well up with more than 10 minutes left, and La Salle folded on the road, not sniffing a comeback the rest of the way.

Darrun Hilliard scored 21 points to lead the Wildcats, who got big contributions from D.C. freshmen Josh Hart (13 points and five rebounds) and Kris Jenkins (11 points). They'll play Rider next before a huge matchup with No. 2 Syracuse on Dec. 28.
