Dominic Artis suspension: Oregon gets guard back Tuesday following 9-game suspension

He won’t start, but Dominic Artis will play for the first time this season Tuesday.

Thearon W. Henderson

Oregon Ducks point guard Dominic Artis will make his season debut Tuesday against the UC Irvine Anteaters, returning from a nine-game suspension. Ben Carter will also return, and both will come off the bench, according to Jon Rothstein of CBSsports.com.

Artis and Carter were suspended indefinitely in November for selling team-issued shoes. The suspension was later adjusted to nine games, and Tuesday is Oregon’s 10th game.

The Ducks have fared well without their starting point guard, remaining undefeated with a handful of moments the selection committee will remember: a neutral-court win over the Georgetown Hoyas to start the season on one of the most neutral courts imaginable, an army base in South Korea; an overtime road win, 115-110, over the Ole Miss Rebels; and a 71-64 home win over the Illinois Fighting Illini on Saturday.

And the point in Artis' absence has been one of Oregon's strengths. Johnathan Loyd has averaged 11.1 points and 7.3 assists per game, finishing with a positive assist-to-turnover ratio in every one of the Ducks' nine games. His assist-to-turnover ratio for the season to date is 3.3.

Carter, who averaged 2.4 points and 2.3 rebounds per game last season as a freshman, is expected to provide front-court depth and strengthen the Ducks’ defense in the paint, Altman said, according to Rothstein.
