Rodney Purvis injury: UConn guard to have shoulder surgery

Though he is sitting out the season as a transfer, Purvis will go under the knife to fix a torn labrum.

USA TODAY Sports

UConn transfer Rodney Purvis will have surgery to repair a torn labrum, according to the Associated Press. An MRI earlier this year confirmed the tear, though his shoulder has bothered him since high school. Ideally, the 6’4 guard -- who came over from North Carolina State -- will be fully healthy to start his sophomore campaign next fall.

The McDonald’s All-American chose NC State out of high school, though UConn was in the running. In a promising freshman season, the Raleigh native scored more than eight points per game on 44 percent shooting. But when he fell out of the starting lineup toward the end of the season, Purvis decided to start over with Kevin Ollie’s program.

Purvis will be expected to replace some of the production of the departing Shabazz Napier, who will finish off a dazzling four-year career at UConn. Ryan Boatright and Omar Calhoun should return, joining Purvis as the top options for the Huskies in the 2014-2015 season.
