Mitch McGary injury: Michigan F will undergo back surgery, out indefinitely

No timetable has been set for the Michigan star’s return this season.

Star Michigan forward Mitch McGary is out indefinitely after electing to undergo surgery on his lower back, the university announced in a release on Friday.

A preseason All-American selection, McGary has not had the procedure yet but plans to in the near future. He said his back problems have been a “daily challenge” going back to late August. There has been no timetable presented for his return.

“We have worked hard rehabbing the injury and I thought that everything was proceeding in the right direction until the last two weeks,” McGary said in the release. “I have consulted with my family, my coaches and our doctors and decided the best option now is to have surgery.

“This was a difficult decision to make because I want to be out there with my teammates. At the same time, I need to be healthy to give everything I can on the court and help my team.”

McGary has missed three of the team’s 11 games this season, all because of back issues.

The 6'10, 255 pound sophomore could have been an NBA draft lottery pick last June, but elected to return to school.
