Derrick Gordon nailed a putback with two seconds remaining in overtime to propel No. 23 UMass over former Big East rival Providence, 69-67.
UMass vs. Providence final score: Minutemen win on Derrick Gordon’s game-winner in OT, 69-62
UMass blew a nine-point lead in the final three minutes, but was able to eke out a win in Amherst.

UMass blew the nine-point lead it held with three minutes remaining, capped off by a game-tying basket by Providence’s Bryce Cotton with 12 seconds remaining in regulation. The Friars kept pace in overtime, but Gordon’s putback of Trey Davis’ missed jumper sealed the deal for the Minutemen.
Superstar guard Chaz Williams struggled with his shot and fouls in this game, hitting just three field goals and fouling out with 1:32 remaining in the second half. He did manage to dish out 10 assists before fouling out, but wasn't there to help fend off the Friars' furious comeback.
Williams’ main target was center Cody Lalanne, who scored 14 points and grabbed 10 rebounds. The Minutemen were able to outrebound the Friars 45-36, including 15-8 on the offensive glass.
Providence also missed all but two of its three-point attempts, shooting 15 percent from behind the arc. The Friars did manage to turn away 11 UMass shots, keeping the 5’9 Williams out of the lane for the easy finishes he is accustomed to.
UMass will play one more non-conference game -- Miami of Ohio -- before starting Atlantic 10 play against St. Joseph’s
