Alex Kirk led all scorers with 25 points on an efficient 8-of-12 from the field as New Mexico defeated San Diego State, 70-60, on Wednesday night at University Arena.
No. 14 New Mexico vs. San Diego State final score: Lobos protect The Pit, 70-60
Alex Kirk did everything in his power to help the Lobos avenge their embarrassing loss to SDSU the last time the two teams met.

Kirk did it on both ends of the floor for the Lobos, including knocking down a career-high three three-pointers. One of those threes proved to be the dagger at the 1:18 mark to give the Lobos a 64-53 lead. He was equally effective on the defensive end, collecting three blocks and changing a number of shots beyond the stat sheet. He also had seven rebounds.
Jamaal Franklin led the way for the Aztecs, who came into the game having won six of their last nine games and two straight before running into the No. 14 Lobos. The Naismith Award candidate finished with 16 points and nine rebounds. San Diego State fell short of a season sweep of New Mexico, who they defeated, 55-34, on Jan. 26.
The Aztecs shot just 36.2 percent from the field collectively and committed 11 turnovers, despite outrebounding the Lobos by a margin of 33-29.
New Mexico has now won seven of eight games and avenged their early-season loss at San Diego State.
