No. 24 Marquette vs. South Florida final score: Golden Eagles in Big East first-place tie after 70-47 win

A game between the Big East’s second-best and second-worst teams came and went predictably.

Jeff Hanisch-USA TODAY Sports

The No. 24 Marquette Golden Eagles had four players in double figures Wednesday, and they landed a wire-to-wire win over the South Florida Bulls, 70-47.

The victory moved Marquette into a first-place tie in the Big East with the No. 9 Syracuse Orange. Marquette was alone in first place heading into last weekend, but dropped a 70-51 road game against the No. 11 Louisville Cardinals. Syracuse has already played this week, beating the No. 25 Notre Dame Fighting Irish, 63-47.

South Florida didn't provide much resistance to Marquette's push to the top of the conference standings Wednesday. If the game were in any doubt midway through the first half, it wasn't after a 10-minute span in which Marquette outscored the Bulls 21-3. Todd Mayo had 13 points off the bench for Marquette on 5-of-7 shooting from the field.

Marquette hits the top of the leaderboard in good position to maintain its standing. After Wednesday’s game, the Golden Eagles will fly home to face the 1-8 DePaul on Saturday afternoon.
