Sophomore Wayne Blackshear scored a career-high 19 points in the win, shooting 7-of-11 in only 18 minutes off the bench.
Louisville is alone in third place in the Big East standings with a 7-3 record. The co-leaders have played one fewer game and are at 7-2: the No. 9 Syracuse Orange (who beat the Notre Dame Fighting Irish on Monday) and the No. 24 Marquette Golden Eagles (who won Wednesday over the South Florida Bulls). Louisville stays on the road for a Saturday night matchup against No. 25 Notre Dame.
Gorgui Dieng, Louisville's junior center, finished with two points, eight rebounds and six blocks. The Cardinals held Rutgers to 33 percent from the floor. Eli Carter led the Scarlet Knights with 13 points.
