Did Duke fans chant something horrible at NC State’s Tyler Lewis?

Did Duke fans chant “how’s your grandma” at an NC State player whose grandma had just died? Listen and decide for yourself.

Streeter Lecka

Though Thursday night’s showdown between Duke and NC State should have been defined by the tremendous offensive performances given by both teams (Lord knows college basketball could use the pub), it was a second half cheer from the Cameron Crazies that wound up being all anyone could talk about.

Thanks to the magic of Twitter, word quickly spread after the game (which was not nationally televised) that the Duke student section had chanted “how’s your grandma” at NC State guard Tyler Lewis while he shot free-throws during the second half. Lewis’ grandmother died last week.

Blue Devil fans quickly responded by saying that chant in question was actually “past your bedtime.”

Decide for yourself:

I’m going to side with Matt Norlander and Shane Ryan here, and say that while I think the intended chant was “past your bedtime,” there are definitely a few Cameron Crazies sneaking the grandma line in there. This would fall in line with the talk of a student saying he heard others in section 19 spreading the word to chant about Lewis’ grandma.

Lewis’ father himself says that he heard the chants, but that it was just a handful of students and not the entire section.

Other Duke fans, according to Rick Lewis, chanted “How’s your grandma?” Margie Lewis, Rick’s mom and Tyler’s grandmother, passed away on Feb. 1. Rick Lewis was at Thursday’s game, sitting behind N.C. State’s bench.

“It was mostly ‘Past your bedtime,’ but there was an instant when a brief number of students chanted about Tyler’s grandmother,” Rick Lewis said Friday. “It wasn’t the entire student section, I think a few tried to outdo themselves.”

Related end note: It’s sort of insane that Duke fans are begging folks to believe that they were chanting “past your bedtime,” since that’s maybe the lamest and least creative cheer I can think of.

Free your minds, Crazies. Let the inspiration flow. Stop sucking.
