The 2013 Big East Tournament got off to an ugly start on Tuesday night. Playing in front of a sparse crowd at Madison Square Garden, the Seton Hall Pirates somehow defeated the South Florida Bulls by a score of 46-42.

Down by eight with three minutes to go, Seton Hall rallied to win in overtime as the Big East Tournament officially got under way.

USF held a 37-29 lead with three minutes to go, but turnovers and a clutch game-tying basket from Fuquan Edwin tied the score at 37-37 with 20 seconds to play. The Bulls missed multiple shot attempts in the closing moments, sending the game to overtime. The Pirates took control early in the extra session and iced the game with two free throws from Edwin.
For a tournament that has been described as survive-and-advance by its former champions, that is exactly what SHU did.
Edwin was the leading scorer for Seton Hall with 17 points. Eugene Teague scored 14 and brought down 10 rebounds for a double-double. As a team, the Pirates shot 41 percent from the field and hit 4-of-18 from behind the three-point arc.
Zach LeDay was the star for South Florida. The freshman forward led the Bulls with 13 points and 15 rebounds. Unfortunately for USF, the play of their talented freshman was not enough to halt a very frustrating season-ending loss. The team went 16-for-66 from the field, which ranks as one of the worst offensive performances in tournament history.
With the win, Seton Hall, which began the tournament as the No. 12 seed, advances to play No. 5 Syracuse in the second round. Tipoff on Wednesday afternoon at 2 p.m. ET. The game will be televised on ESPN.
