Texas vs. TCU preview: Longhorns eye .500 record as they open Big 12 Tournament

The Texas Longhorns’ disappointing season has them as a seventh seed to open the 2013 Big 12 Tournament, where they’ll play against the TCU Horned Frogs.

USA TODAY Sports

It's been a disappointing season for the Texas Longhorns. With point guard Myck Kabongo only available for the last eight games because of a 23-game suspension, Rick Barnes' squad has only used the point guard's return to pull itself out of the gutter.

Now it’s a matter if they make a Big 12 Tournament run to salvage the season.

Texas can start that process by geting over the hump and away from a losing record with a victory on Wednesday against the TCU Horned Frogs in their Big 12 Tournament opener in Kansas City, Mo. The No. 7-seed Longhorns (15-16, 7-11 Big 12) have won five of eight since Kabongo's return, including three overtime contests.

Barnes has made up for Kabongo’s lost time by playing him nearly 38 minutes per game where he’s averaging 15.8 points, 5.3 assists and 5.3 rebounds per game.

Meanwhile, the Horned Frogs are hoping to pull off one of the bigger upsets that any 7-10 matchup could produce. TCU sits 11-20 on the year and 2-16 in conference play, and the Horned Frogs are led by Kyan Anderson, a 5'11 point guard averaging 12.1 points and 3.5 assists per game.

The winner of the first-round matchup will advance to face No. 2-seed Kansas State on Thursday.
