ESPN has most-watched college basketball season on record

Huge averages on ESPN, ESPN2 and ESPNU led The Worldwide Leader to its best season ever.

USA TODAY Sports

The networks of ESPN aired 602 (!) college basketball games this season. Their efforts did not go unrewarded, as The Worldwide Leader has their “most-viewed” college basketball season on record.

Despite the claims of many that this particular season wasn’t one to write home about, ESPN averaged 1.37 million viewers over 135 games to set a new record for college basketball on the network. ESPN averaged a 1.1 rating for 2012-13. Between ESPN, ESPN2 and ESPNU’s aforementioned 600+ regular season games, the networks averaged 508,000 viewers.

ESPN also released its top 10 college basketball markets, essentially which cities in the country averaged the best ratings over those 600+ games. Louisville remained the highest-rated market for ESPN college hoops’ telecasts for the 11th consecutive season. Other top 10 markets included Indianapolis, Knoxville, and pretty much every city you could name in the states of North Carolina and Ohio.

ESPN’s most-watched, highest-rated game of the season? Michigan-Indiana, then a No. 1 vs. No. 3 matchup, which hit 4.03 million viewers and a 2.9 rating.
