No. 1 Georgetown vs. No. 5 Syracuse final score: Orange overcome Hoyas in thrilling OT finish

Syracuse needed to stave off a furious rally from Georgetown, but they held on in overtime and reminded fans of what they will miss when the Big East splits next year.

The final Big East tournament game between the Georgetown Hoyas and Syracuse Orange did not disappoint. Syracuse topped Georgetown, 58-55, in a thrilling overtime game to advance to the Big East finals.

Syracuse took over this game early, jumping out to a 29-20 halftime lead and catching the Hoyas flat-footed. However, Georgetown made a furious comeback in the second half, using a 12-4 run to tie the game with just 1:24 minutes left. After an intense back-and-forth over the final minutes, Otto Porter Jr. made two free throws with seven seconds left to send the game to overtime.

The extra period was all Syracuse, outscoring the Hoyas, 7-4, and holding off a late rally.

As usual, James Southerland was the big hero for Syracuse, scoring 13 points. Brandon Triche had 13 points and three assists. Mikael Hopkins was the leading scorer for Georgetown, racking up 15 points and eight rebounds.

The Big East is splintering next season, and this may be the last game between these storied rivals we will see for a while. In that case, they gave us a game for the ages. The Orange will face either Louisville or Notre Dame in the championship game.
