After uprooting Georgetown, the No. 1 seed in the Big East tournament, Syracuse will look to finish its time in the disintegrating Big East with a conference championship. Standing in its way is Louisville, who smashed Notre Dame in a double-digit win to move on.
2013 Big East Tournament results and bracket: Syracuse tops no. 1 seed Georgetown
The Big East tournament semifinals yielded one upset with Syracuse topping top-seeded Georgetown in overtime. Notre Dame couldn’t repeat the magic against Louisville, falling to a record-tying performance by Peyton Siva.
No. 5 Syracuse uses overtime to beat no. 1 Georgetown
The classic Big East rivalry between Syracuse and Georgetown provided yet another thriller as the Orange prevailed in overtime, 58-55.
Syracuse dominated most of the game, leading 29-20 at halftime, but allowed a frantic Georgetown comeback in the final minutes that ended with Otto Porter Jr. tying the game with a pair of free throws with seven seconds remaining. Unable to hit a desperation shot at the buzzer, the game went into overtime.
After the emotional run to tie the game, the Hoyas were unable to take any momentum and fell, 7-4, in the bonus period.
Baye Keita, Brandon Triche and James Southerland scored 13 points each for the Orange, while Mikael Hopkins led Georgetown with 15 points and eight rebounds.
No. 2 Louisville takes care of no. 6 Notre Dame
Louisville's backcourt of Russ Smith and Peyton Siva was too much for Notre Dame to handle in a 69-57 bruising that never got out of hand for the Cardinals.
Smith led the Cardinals in scoring with 20 and added six assists, while Siva scored 12 and notched seven steals, tying a tournament record in that department.
The Fighting Irish shot just 37 percent against the Louisville defense, committing 16 turnovers. Jack Cooley and Jerian Grant scored 14 each to lead the Notre Dame.
