Texas Tech fires basketball staff except for interim coach Chris Walker, per report

After a disastrous season that started with allegations of mistreating players under ex-coach Billy Gillispie, Texas Tech has wiped out its entire basketball staff, sans one person.

USA TODAY Sports

The Texas Tech Red Raiders have reportedly fired their entire basketball staff with the exception of interim head coach Chris Walker, according to Nick Kosmider of the Lubbock Avalanche-Journal.

For more on this story, head over to Viva the Matadors.

Though Walker will remain on staff at least for now, he has not been given the permanent head coaching position. However, he is a candidate for the job, per Kosmider.

Texas Tech defeated West Virginia in the opening round of the Big 12 Tournament on Wednesday before being routed by Kansas in the quarterfinals. The Red Raiders finished the season with an 11-20 record under Walker, who took over as head coach prior to the season after Billy Gillispie resigned amid allegations of player mistreatment.

The Red Raiders won just three regular-season conference games, two of which came against newcomer TCU. Texas Tech lost 13 out of 14 games between Jan. 8 and Feb. 25, with the lone win coming over Iowa State on Jan. 23.
