Maryland vs. UNC results: Tar Heels move on to ACC final with 79-76 win

Maryland’s ACC run is over. Will it be enough to beckon an invite from the NCAA selection committee?

Five players scored in double figures, and the No. 3-seeded North Carolina Tar Heels advanced to the ACC tournament final with a 79-76 win over the Maryland Terrapins on Saturday afternoon.

Maryland, seeded seventh in the league tournament, finished its season 22-12 and will now wait until its fate is announced on Selection Sunday. The Terps' season looked destined for the NIT before a Friday win over the second-seeded Duke Blue Devils, Maryland's second win over Duke this season. But even after that game, the Terps seemed to need some help getting in the tournament. SB Nation bracketologist Chris Dobbertean had Maryland as one of the last four out before losing to North Carolina.

The Terps had possession down three points with 16 seconds left, but Logan Aronhalt missed a 25-footer.

Wells finished with 15 points and 10 rebounds for Maryland.

P.J. Hairston scored 12 points for North Carolina after suffering a cut to the webbing on his left hand in a quarterfinals win over the Florida State Seminoles. He received eight stitches, and had his hand heavily wrapped. He was a game-time decision.

North Carolina will play the top-seeded Miami Hurricanes in the ACC championship game Sunday at 1 p.m. on ESPN.
