NCAA bracket 2013: Oregon gets no respect

SB Nation’s Oregon blog, Addicted to Quack, is not happy with the No. 12 seed bestowed upon the Ducks.

USA TODAY Sports

The Oregon Ducks won the Pac-12 Tournament and compiled 26 wins during the season, but still got saddled with a No. 12 seed in the NCAA Tournament. The Ducks will take on Oklahoma State in the round of 64 in the Midwest Region, with the winner advancing to play either St. Louis or New Mexico St.

Oregon was considered one of the most under-seeded teams in the tournament and David Piper at Addicted to Quack agrees, saying "there was apparently no rhyme or reason to the NCAA selection committee this season." Piper goes on to say:

Making things even more bizarre was that UCLA, whom Oregon beat twice and is without Jordan Adams, was given a No. 6 seed and will play Minnesota in the South Region in Austin. The resumes of Oregon and UCLA are remarkably similar. The Bruins beat Arizona three times and beat Colorado and Missouri, but lost to Oregon twice, and also ASU, Cal, and WSU. How do you justify that as six seeds ahead of Oregon?

The seeding of all the Pac-12 teams does certainly look screwy on paper. And although selection committee chairman Mike Bobinski said Oregon was pushed down from a No. 11 seed to a No. 12 seed during the bracketing process, even a No. 11 seed seems low for Oregon in comparison to UCLA and Arizona.

But, as Piper notes, there is a silver lining for Oregon in that they get to play their opening games in San Jose, Calif. and will be the closest thing to a home team out of the four in their first weekend bracket. A run to the Sweet 16 is certainly not out of the question.
