NCAA Tournament 2013: Mike Muscala poised to make nation take notice of Bucknell

There aren’t a whole lot of great big men in the tournament. Here’s one of them.

USA TODAY Sports

The best mid-major big man in the field is Bucknell's Mike Muscala, a 6'11, 239-pound senior, whose advantage is in his low-post skill and his knack for grabbing defensive rebounds. He averaged 19.0 points and 11.2 rebounds this season, and his three double-doubles in three games of the Patriot League tournament helped put the Bison over the top, just like during the rest of the season.

He’s also No. 1 in the country in KenPom.com’s defensive rebounding percentage and No. 5 in his offensive rating standings, the next mid-major player after South Dakota State’s Nate Wolters.

Muscala has well-developed low-post moves that are perhaps better than anyone in college basketball, quick feet and effortless touch with both hands. And he has experience leading the Bison to big wins. Just this season, Bucknell has wins over Purdue, George Mason and La Salle, and the Bison nearly scored an upset at Missouri in which the Tigers ultimately won, 66-64. In those four games, Muscala averaged 18.3 points and 11.5 boards.
