NIT 2013 schedule and bracket: Kentucky, Alabama begin play Tuesday

Looking for postseason basketball to watch? Can’t wait until March Madness begins on Thursday? The NIT has you covered.

USA TODAY Sports

The 2013 National Invitational Tournament officially tips off on Tuesday. While it doesn’t have the prestige or reputation of the other tournament starting this week, there’s still plenty of interesting basketball to be played.

Kentucky, Virginia, Alabama and Southern Miss earned the No. 1 seeds after missing out on the Big Dance. Three of those teams will play their first round games on Tuesday. It’s a chance for teams who felt snubbed to prove themselves and get a chance to finish out the postseason in Madison Square Garden. Not a bad consolation prize for a disappointing season.

The NIT runs through April 4 and will be broadcast on the entire ESPN family of networks. The first three rounds take place at the campuses of the higher seeds. Here’s the complete schedule for Tuesday (all times Eastern):

No. 7 Niagara Purple Eagles at No. 2 Maryland Terrapins -- 7 p.m., ESPN2

No. 5 St. John's Red Storm at No. 4 St. Joseph's Hawks -- 7 p.m., ESPNU

No. 5 Louisiana Tech Bulldogs at No. 4 Florida St. Seminoles -- 7:15 p.m., ESPN3

No. 1 Kentucky Wildcats at No. 8 Robert Morris Colonials -- 7:30 p.m., ESPN

No. 8 Norfolk St. Spartans at No. 1 Virginia Cavaliers -- 9 p.m., ESPNU

No. 8 Northeastern Huskies at No. 1 Alabama Crimson Tide -- 9 p.m., ESPN2

No. 6 Ohio Bobcats at No. 3 Denver Pioneers -- 9:15 p.m., ESPN3

No. 6 Washington Huskies at No. 3 BYU Cougars -- 9:30 p.m., ESPN

No. 5 Stephen F. Austin Lumberjacks at No. 4 Stanford Cardinal -- 11 p.m., ESPN2
