NCAA basketball tournament 2013: Jamal Olasewere attempts to help write Long Island’s Cinderella story

Olasewere isn’t a great shooter, but he was still one of the game’s best scorers this season.

USA TODAY Sports

The Long Island University Blackbirds snuck into the field of 68 after winning the Northeast Conference tournament as a No. 3 seed, and their fast-paced style could pose problems for their first-round game. The Blackbirds' go-to guy is Jamal Olasewere, a 6'7 forward who scored 18.9 points per game this season.

Olasewere doesn’t have much of an outside game to speak of, nor does he put up that facade—he was 20-of-60 from three-point range this season—but he attacks the rim and makes teams pay with his athleticism. He gets to the free throw line a lot and shoots a respectable 69.6 percent there; he’s shot at least seven free throw attempts in 13 of LIU’s 20 wins so far this season.

The key to stopping Olasewere is making him shoot jumpers, but it’s easier said than done. His tournament experience won’t hurt him, either. This will be the senior’s third NCAA tournament appearance in a row for the Blackbirds.
