CBI bracket results 2013: Three teams move on to quarterfinals

The CBI completed three first-round games on Tuesday. Let’s recap the action.

USA TODAY Sports

The 2013 College Basketball Invitational tipped off Tuesday. Three teams will move on to the quarterfinal round in the 16-team tournament. The rest of the first round games will be played on Wednesday, but first, let’s recap Tuesday’s action:

George Mason Patriots 78, Charleston Cougars 77

Erik Copes made a tip shot with just one second left to put the Patriots on top. George Mason led 44-36 at halftime, but had to stave off a big second half rally by Charleston. All five starters on the Patriots scored double-digit points, and Sherrod Wright led the way with 20. George Mason will play either Texas or Houston in the quarterfinal round.

Wyoming Cowboys 67, Lehigh Mountain Hawks 66

Another game that came right down to the wire. Nathan Sobey sank a buzzer-beater three pointer to complete the comeback for Wyoming, who rallied from a seven point deficit with three minutes to go. Derrious Gilmore racked up 25 points and Larry Nance Jr. added 20. The Cowboys await the winner of Wednesday's North Dakota State-Western Michigan matchup.

Santa Clara Broncos 77, Vermont Catamounts 67

Kevin Foster scored 23 points and Yannick Atanga grabbed 10 rebounds to lead the Broncos past Vermont. Santa Clara shot 51.1 percent from the field, got nine steals and forced 16 turnovers. The Broncos will face either Western Illinois or Purdue in the next round.
