Syracuse scandal: Basketball program under ‘major’ NCAA investigation

The Syracuse basketball program is reportedly undergoing a ‘major and wide-ranging’ investigation by the NCAA. The allegations have not yet been specified.

USA TODAY Sports

The Syracuse University basketball program is being investigated by the NCAA for potential violations, according to a CBS Sports report.

No details have been released as on the nature of the investigation, but a source told CBS Sports that it is “major and wide-ranging in nature.” When asked to describe how major the violations may be, the source replied, “Throw a dart at the [NCAA] Manual [and you would hit a violation by Syracuse].”

The NCAA has made no comment at this time, as they do not comment on ongoing investigations. This case has nothing to do with the sexual abuse allegations laid against former assistant coach Bernie Fine.

The Syracuse program has already been under investigation for at least a year over potential violations of its drug abuse program. It is unknown whether this new case is related to that investigation.

Sean Keely of Nunes Magician believes that this has been a long time coming:

SU being under NCAA investigation isn’t news in and of itself. We’ve known that since the James Southerland suspension. What does make it newsy is the whole “major and wide-ranging in nature” part.

One other thing to keep in mind at the speculation stage ... Stan Kissel, SU director of basketball operations, the guy in charge of player academics, unexpectedly resigned in December. Ahem.

Down the rabbit hole we go. Again. Again.

SB Nation will keep you updated on this story as more information becomes available.
