Offense was at a premium as the Wichita State Shockers and Pittsburgh Panthers met in the second round of the NCAA Tournament Thursday. In the end, it was Shockers that clawed out the 73-55 win to advance to the round of 32.

In what was likely the sloppiest game to be played this March, Wichita State clawed out a win over Pittsburgh to advance to the third round of the NCAA Tournament.

The two teams combined to go 3-of-37 from behind the arc. This three-point attempt from Pitt’s Trey Woodall was a pretty solid reflection of what went down in Salt Lake City this afternoon:
WSU shot 37 percent from the field. Pitt hit just 35 percent of its attempts. It was an ugly basketball game for everyone who watched, and it’s tough to envision the Shockers doing much more in the Big Dance unless they really pick it up on the offensive end.
Wichita State moved out to a double-digit lead early in the second half and maintained throughout. Pittsburgh tried to put together a handful of runs, but the Panthers just couldn’t get consecutive shots to fall when they needed them most.
Malcolm Armstead led WSU with 22 points, four assists and three rebounds. Cleanthony Early chipped in with 17 points and seven boards. Only one player reached double-digits in scoring for the Panthers: freshman center Steven Adams, who had 11 points and 10 rebounds.
With the win, Wichita State advances to likely take on Gonzaga in the third round. That game will be played on Saturday afternoon, with the winner moving on to the Sweet 16. You can find an updated, printable bracket here, courtesy of your friends at SB Nation.
