NCAA Tournament 2013 bracket, VCU vs. Akron: Rams crush Zips, 88-42

There would be no 5-vs.-12 upset in the night cap in Auburn Hills between VCU and Akron. In fact, the game turned out to be the farthest possible thing from an upset.

Troy Daniels scored 23 points to lead the No. 5 VCU Rams to an 88-42 rout over the shorthanded No. 12 Akron Zips in the second round of the 2013 NCAA Tournament on Thursday night in Auburn Hills, Mich.

VCU forced 21 turnovers and shot 53.8 percent from the floor against an Akron team that was hit hard by illness and injury prior to the game. Both Brian Walsh and Pat Forsythe came down with a case of the flu, while reserve guard Deji Ibitayo was left unable to play due to back spasms.

The Rams shoved their brand of “Havoc” defense down the throats of the Zips, allowing Akron to make just 34.9 percent of its shots while building a lead of as many as 47 points in the second half.

Juvonte Reddic added 21 points for VCU, which will face the fourth-seeded Michigan Wolverines in the third round on Saturday.
