South Dakota State vs Michigan: Hardaway ‘brutally effective’ in Wolverine romp

Michigan pulled away from the Jackrabbits, advancing to the Round of 32.

The Michigan Wolverines got a nice draw courtesy of the NCAA Tournament committee, getting to stay in Auburn Hills, Mich., for their contest against the South Dakota State Jackrabbits.

Michigan took full advantage, beating South Dakota St. 71-56 at the Palace in Auburn Hills. It wasn’t an easy game for the Wolverines, but you also never got the feeling that they were in danger of being upset by the No. 13 seed.

While the nation's top point guard, Trey Burke, struggled all night, the rest of the team picked up the slack writes Zach Travis of Maize N' Brew, our Michigan blog:

Glenn Robinson came out hot in the second half on the way to 21 points on 8/9 shooting. Tim Hardaway Jr. was only slightly less brutally effective, scoring 21 on 8/13. If that wasn't enough, Mitch McGary was 6/9 with eight rebounds and 13 points in his third start of the season. He provided defensive pressure all over the court, adding two steals and a block.

Now, the Wolverines get to face the Rams of VCU, a terrific team out of the Atlantic 10 coached by the young, energetic Shaka Smart. The Rams play one of the best presses in college basketball, choking off passing lanes and creating exactly what they call their defense; havoc.
