2013 NIT bracket results: Virginia moves on to quarterfinals

The Cavaliers earned another NIT home game by beating St. John’s on Sunday.

USA TODAY Sports

The No. 1 seed Virginia Cavaliers took out the No. 5 seed St. John's Red Storm, 68-50, to advance to the NIT quarterfinals on Sunday. UVA controlled the game throughout, and held a double-digit lead for the final 12:15.

Justin Anderson led the Cavaliers with an efficient day from the free throw line. Anderson hit 9 of 10 free throws on the way to 18 points. Taylor Barnette chipped in with 13 points off the bench, including three three-pointers.

As is typical, Virginia’s defense was dominant. St. John’s was held to a 35 effective field goal percentage, turned the ball over 14 times, and shot just 10 free throws. Meanwhile, Virginia was efficient on the inside, hitting 66 percent of their twos.

Virginia now advances to play Iowa, with the winner heading to the NIT semifinals in Madison Square Garden. Alabama, Maryland, and Baylor have also moved on to the quarterfinals, with four spots left to be determined.
