George Mason to join Atlantic 10, according to reports

The Patriots will join a league that sent five schools to the Big Dance this year but is also losing Butler and Xavier to the new Big East.

Peter Casey-USA TODAY Sports

George Mason University will announce on Monday that it will move to the Atlantic 10 Conference in all sports, according to multiple reports.

The conference switch will become effective on July 1 and will be announced tomorrow in a 1 p.m. ET news conference, CBSSports’ Jon Rothstein reported.

The Patriots are perhaps best known for their unexpected run to the Final Four in 2006. That year, George Mason knocked off Michigan State, North Carolina, Wichita State and Connecticut before falling to eventual champion Florida in the national semifinals.

This season, they finished 10-8 in the Colonial Athletic Association and earned a bid to the College Basketball Invitational. They will host Houston Monday night at 7 p.m. in the quarterfinals.

Next year, George Mason will enter an Atlantic 10 Conference that is losing two teams, Butler and Xavier, to the Big East. The addition of George Mason will give the A-10 13 members, meaning it is possible that a 14th will be added soon to keep the league at an even number of teams.
