Duke’s Chris Collins favored for Northwestern basketball coach, according to report

Duke assistant Chris Collins is the top candidate to fill the vacant Northwestern head coaching position, according to Jeff Goodman of CBS. Goodman reports that Collins met with university representatives on Monday.

Collins has connections to the area. He grew up in Illinois as his father, 76ers coach Doug Collins, was head man for the Chicago Bulls. He was highly recruited as a McDonald’s All-American and went on to play for Duke from 1993 to 1996.

After a coaching stint in the WNBA, Collins joined Mike Krzyzewski’s staff in 2000, eventually becoming associate head coach in 2008.

Bill Carmody was fired as head coach after a 13-19 record in 2012-2013. He had previously guided the program to four-straight NIT appearances, but his highest Big 10 finish was seventh in eleven seasons on the job. Like all other Northwestern coaches, Carmody failed to achieve the program’s first appearance in the NCAA tournament.
