Josh Pastner agrees to new contract with Memphis, according to reports

Josh Pastner has agreed to a contract extension that will keep him as the head coach of Memphis, according to reports from both the Memphis Commercial Appeal and CBS Sports. Pastner had been considered a candidate for a number of vacant jobs, including the opening at USC.

USA TODAY Sports

Memphis Tigers basketball head coach Josh Pastner has confirmed that he has agreed to a long-term extension and will stay at the school, according to CBS Sports.

The news was first reported by the Memphis Commercial Appeal's Jason Smith, and Pastner confirmed it with CBS' Gary Parrish. Parrish tweeted the following on Tuesday afternoon:

The move ends any speculation that Pastner will pursue other job opportunities, specifically the vacant head coaching job at USC. Pastner, who has strong ties to the West Coast from his playing and assistant coaching days at Arizona, and was listed as a strong candidate for the Trojans’ job on Monday by CBS.

Now Pastner will return to Memphis, where he recently completed his fourth season as head coach, after replacing John Calipari following the 2009 season.

Pastner has accumulated a record of 106-34 overall and three NCAA Tournament appearances in his four years on the job, and notched the first NCAA Tournament win of career last Thursday against Saint Mary’s.

The Tigers’ season ended with a Round of 32 loss to Michigan State on Saturday.
