The final day of the Sweet 16 provided plenty of drama and excitement. We got our first overtime game of the NCAA Tournament and another No. 1 seed fell. The Elite Eight matchups are now set, but first let’s recap Friday’s action:
NCAA Tournament scores 2013: Louisville last No. 1 seed standing
Louisville is the only No. 1 seed left in the tournament after Kansas fell to Michigan in a dramatic overtime game.
No. 1 Louisville Cardinals 77, No. 12 Oregon Ducks 69
Russ Smith continued his incredible tourney run, scoring 31 points to lead the Cardinals in a game that was never as close as the final score indicated. Louisville raced out to a 45-31 lead and while the Ducks tried to make things interesting in the second half, they never got within eight points. Louisville continues to justify their No. 1 overall placement, and will be facing Duke in the Midwest regional final.
No. 4 Michigan Wolverines 87, No. 1 Kansas Jayhawks 85 (OT)
Easily the best game of the tournament so far. Kansas led by 14 points at one point in this game, but Trey Burke led the way as the Wolverines mounted a furious rally in the second half. Burke would sink a ridiculous 30-footer at the end of regulation to tie the game and send it into overtime, where Michigan held on to reach the Elite Eight for the first time since 1994. Burke finished with 23 points and 10 assists, and Mitch McGary led the team with 25 points and 14 rebounds.
The Wolverines will play Florida in the South regional final.
No. 2 Duke Blue Devils 71, No. 3 Michigan St. Spartans 61
Seth Curry was brilliant, scoring 29 points and sinking 6 of 9 three pointers as Duke took advantage of a cold streak by Michigan State to pull away in the second half. Rasheed Sulaimon added 16 points and Mason Plumlee grabbed seven rebounds. The Spartan struggled from deep, making just 3 of 12 three pointers.
Duke will play Louisville for a spot in the Final Four.
No. 3 Florida Gators 62, No. 15 Florida Gulf Coast Eagles 50
It looked like the Eagles had another magical run in them early on as they jumped out to a 14-5 lead, but Florida was just too physical and athletic for the Eagles to keep up. Mike Rosario scored 15 points and the team had a relatively easy win despite poor shooting (37.5 percent field goals). FGCU coughed up 19 turnovers and 10 steals, two stats that had a big difference in this game.
The Gators will play Michigan on Sunday.
