The Cardinals overcame a serious injury to sophomore guard Kevin Ware in the first half to earn a spot in the Final Four for the second straight season. Ware broke his leg while defending a three-point shot from Duke's Tyler Thornton at the 6:41 mark in the first half, resulting in a lengthy delay. Duke scored six of the next eight points to take a three-point advantage when play resumed, but Louisville fought back with a similar run, led by eight points in the final six minutes of the half from Russ Smith, and entered the break with a three-point lead.
Louisville extended its lead to six points early in the second half, but Duke embarked on a 10-4 run to tie the game at 42 on Mason Plumlee's dunk at the 16:20 mark. That would be Duke's last field goal until Quinn Cook's layup with 8:05 remaining, as the Cardinals used several great plays by Peyton Siva during that span to break the game open.
Smith finished with 23 points to lead Louisville, and Siva chipped in 16. Gorgui Dieng added 14 points and 11 rebounds while shooting 6-of-8 from the floor.
Mason Plumlee led Duke with 17 points and 12 rebounds. Ryan Kelly finished with just seven points after missing a large chunk of the first half because of foul trouble.
