MAAC basketball standings 2013: Niagara wins regular season title

In what was a closely contested race throughout conference play, Niagara finished a game ahead of Loyola (MD) and Rider in the MAAC.

Matt Cashore-USA TODAY Sports

The Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference has wrapped up their regular season play. With just the conference tournament standing between one team and the NCAA Tournament, all eyes will be on the Mass Mutual Center next weekend.

The Niagara Purple Eagles won the regular season crown with a 13-5 record. They locked up the No. 1 seed in the MAAC Tournament with a convincing win over St. Peter's this weekend.

Loyola (MD) and Rider fell just short of Niagara this season, finishing their MAAC slate with 12-6 marks. Canisius and the high-scoring Iona Gaels ended with 11-7 records. Fairfield and Manhattan finished at .500 with 9-9 records.

Marist was 6-12, while Siena and St. Peter’s rounded out the bottom half of the league. These schools will be considerable underdogs to cut the nets down at the end of the conference tournament.

Given the parity at the top of the league, four days at the MAAC Tournament should make for a good time.
