Big East standings 2013: Georgetown, Marquette, Louisville fighting for regular season title

Georgetown has ridden Otto Porter and a 12-game winning streak to the top spot in the Big East, but there’s still two games to play, and Louisville and Marquette still have a shot at taking the title.

Three teams still have a shot at bringing home the Big East title, with Georgetown sitting in the driver’s seat with just two games before the end of the regular season.

Otto Porter has really willed the Hoyas into the national conversation: the 6’8 forward leads the Hoyas with 16.6 points and 7.6 boards per game while shooting 46.9 percent from three - double his percentage from last year. It was Porter’s 33 that carried the Hoyas over Syracuse in the highest-attended on-campus game in NCAA history last Saturday, and his 17-point, 12-rebound outing that gave Georgetown a win over Louisville in January, and his 22 points on just 12 shots that helped the team escape from a double-overtime game against UConn on Wednesday. Since a loss to South Florida - seemingly an outlier, as the Bulls are the worst team in the Big East - Georgetown has won 12 in a row, including four games against ranked teams. That’s quite a resume. When you consider that Georgetown’s only non-conference loss was in overtime to Indiana, they really do look like a force to be reckoned with come tourney time.

Still in the mix for the regular season title are Louisville, ranked No. 1 in the country before a January loss to Syracuse they avenged this past week, and Marquette, who have won all 16 games they’ve played at the Bradley Center. They’re both a game back of Georgetown. Of the three, Marquette might have the best chance of winning the conference: Louisville still has to play Notre Dame, a rematch of a five-overtime game earlier this year, and Georgetown still has to play Syracuse, who are still likely to be ranked next week despite a three-game losing skid. Meanwhile, the Eagles just have to play a terrible DePaul team and a St. John’s squad that is .500 in conference.

The final games of the regular season will also help decide who gets byes in the Big East Tournament. The top four teams get a double-bye straight into the quarterfinals. Georgetown’s already clinched that, and Louisville and Marquette will do that with just one win. The three teams directly behind them - Pittsburgh, Syracuse, and Notre Dame - are all jockeying for that fourth double-bye.

Team Conference Overall
Georgetown 13-3 23-4
Louisville 12-4 24-5
