College basketball rankings: Gonzaga tops USA Today coaches poll

As top teams fall week in and week out, Gonzaga finds itself at No. 1 in the USA Today poll, thanks to a 12-game winning streak.

USA TODAY Sports

The Gonzaga Bulldogs move into the top spot in the USA Today coaches poll as the rest of the top teams in college basketball continue to slip up. Indiana, No. 1 for the past two weeks, lost their grip on the top ranking when they lost to Minnesota on Feb. 26. Six of the top 10 teams from last week lost at least one game.

The regular season is done for Gonzaga, which went 16-0 in the West Coast Conference and begins its conference tournament on Saturday, March 9 after receiving a double bye into the semifinals. Gonzaga received 29 first-place votes in the USA Today poll with Kansas (No. 3) and Louisville (No. 6) each receiving one vote. Indiana fell one spot to No. 2, with Duke and Georgetown rounding out the top five at No. 4 and No. 5 respectively.

The Arizona Wildcats were the big losers of the week, falling seven spots from No. 11 to No. 18 thanks to a pair of losses. Wisconsin also took a tumble, as the Badgers fell five spots, from 16th to 21st.

The biggest riser on the week was VCU, who jumped from No. 25 to No. 19. Marquette also had a good week, improving from 22nd to 17th.

Pittsburgh (No. 22) and Oregon (No. 25) entered the rankings after being unranked last week. Butler (No. 21) and Akron (No. 24) fell out of the rankings.
