No. 5 Georgetown vs. Villanova final score: Wildcats boost resume with huge 67-57 win over Georgetown

Villanova all but guaranteed itself a spot in the NCAA Tournament with a huge win over No. 5 Georgetown Wednesday night in Philadelphia.

USA TODAY Sports

With postseason implications aplenty and two classic Big East teams duking it out in early March, Villanova came away with a huge 67-57 win Wednesday night over Georgetown in Philadelphia to nearly cement a spot in the NCAA Tournament

The win puts the Wildcats at 10-8 in the Big East, 19-12 overall, with wins over Marquette, Syracuse, Louisville and now the No. 5 Hoyas.

With plenty on the line for both teams, it’s no surprise that this one was close throughout. Villanova took a four-point lead into the locker room and stayed ahead for much of the second half. The Hoyas cut the deficit to one on multiple occasions, but were not able to pull ahead in the final 20 minutes.

JayVaughn PInkston was efficient all night for the Wildcats. He had 20 points on 11-14 shooting from the line, many of those free throws coming in the final ten minutes.

Big East Player of the Year candidate Otto Porter led Georgetown with 17 points, but the Hoyas turned it over 21 times.

If Georgetown won, it could have clinched a share of the Big East regular-season championship. Instead, the Hoyas will have to beat rival Syracuse on Saturday to lock up the title. Villanova, meanwhile, wrapped up its regular season Wednesday and will have a full week off before beginning Big East Tournament play in the second round at Madison Square Garden on March 13.
