UCLA vs. Washington State final score: Cougars knock off UCLA, 73-61

Washington State snapped UCLA’s four-game winning streak behind 20 points from Brock Motum on Wednesday night.

USA TODAY Sports

Washington State halted UCLA’s four-game winning streak with a 73-61 upset win Wednesday night in Pullman, Wash. The Bruins had won six of their last seven games to surge back into the Top 25 before falling to the Cougars.

Brock Motum had a double-double with 20 points and 11 rebounds to lead Washington State, which snapped a nine-game skid with the surprising victory. Royce Woolridge had a memorable night, as well. He poured on 19 points on 8-of-14 shooting.

Washington State limited UCLA to just 39-percent shooting on the evening, including a 28-percent mark from three-point range. The Cougars also dominated the glass, outrebounding the Bruins, 43-20. Dexter Kernich-Drew joined Motum with a double-double of his own (11 points and 11 rebounds) to help Washington State's cause.

Shabazz Muhammad had 14 points for UCLA, but shot just 4-of-19 from the field and 2-of-11 from three. Jordan Adams had 18 points to lead a Bruins team that struggled all night.

UCLA trailed 35-24 at the half and was never able to make a run. The teams traded baskets for much of the second half, with the Cougars constantly finding answers to UCLA buckets. Washington State kept the Bruins at arms’ length down the stretch by making its free throws — the Cougars were 7-of-9 from the line in the last five minutes — and controlling the boards.

While Washington State now has the opportunity to close the regular season on a high note, UCLA falls a half-game behind Oregon in the Pac-12 standings with the loss. UCLA plays at Washington on Saturday, while the Ducks have two road games left — at Colorado and Utah — before the Pac-12 tournament.
