ACC standings 2013: Miami falls, but maintains top conference ranking

Three games on Wednesday night shook things up a bit in the ACC.

USA TODAY Sports

The ACC is home to quite a few bubble teams this March. With three games on the slate for Wednesday night, the conference standings were shaken up a bit.

The Miami Hurricanes, who entered the day with a 1.5-game advantage over Duke, fell to Georgia Tech in a lapse game. Miami will now shift their focus to finishing the regular season strong before making its case for a No. 1 seed with a strong showing at the ACC Tournament.

The North Carolina Tar Heels have been playing inspired basketball lately. They continued that trend with a 79-68 win over Maryland on Wednesday night. It seems UNC is a pretty safe bet to secure a bid to the NCAA Tournament assuming they can avoid an early exit at the conference tourney next weekend.

North Carolina State has fallen short of preseason expectations, but also remains on the right side of the bubble at this point in the year. They took a step toward securing that bid with a 81-66 win over Wake Forest.

Here is an updated look at the standings after all of Wednesday’s action.

Miami (FL) 14-3 23-6
Duke 13-4 26-4
North Carolina 12-5 22-8
North Carolina State 10-6 21-8
Virginia 10-6 20-9
Maryland 8-9 20-10
Florida State 7-9 15-14
Georgia Tech 6-11 16-13
Boston College 6-11 14-16
Clemson 5-12 13-16
Wake Forest 5-12 13-16
Virginia Tech 4-13 12-17

On Thursday, the lone ACC game will pit Virginia up against Florida State. The Cavaliers are also squarely on the bubble, and a road loss at this point in the season would not look good on their resume.
