ACC basketball standings 2013: Virginia loss further blurs picture

The ACC standings are even more jumbled following Virginia’s loss to Florida State on Thursday.

Joel Auerbach

As is the case every March, the ACC has some high-quality programs battling it out for conference tournament and NCAA Tournament seeding. With just a couple of days left in the regular season, every game matters for every team.

On Thursday night, the Virginia Cavaliers, who began the day right on the bubble, squared off with Florida State. Unfortunately, things did not go according to plan, as the Cavaliers fell in the final seconds to the Seminoles, 53-51. After an inspiring win over Duke, Virginia has since lost to Boston College and FSU, not helping their bubble chances at all.

With each team having just one game to play in the regular season, the conference standings are pretty jumbled.

Miami had a chance to secure the title outright, but fell at home to Wake Forest. Now, the Hurricanes have to beat Clemson on Saturday if they hope to win the ACC.

If Miami were to lose and Duke beats North Carolina, the Hurricanes and Blue Devils would share the conference crown. If UNC beats Duke, they tie their longtime rivals for second place.

Here is an updated look at the standings as of Friday morning.

Miami (FL) 14-3 23-6
Duke 13-4 26-4
North Carolina 12-5 22-8
North Carolina State 11-6 22-8
Virginia 10-7 20-10
Maryland 8-9 20-10
Florida State 8-9 16-14
Georgia Tech 6-11 16-13
Boston College 6-11 14-16
Clemson 5-12 13-16
Wake Forest 5-12 12-17
Virginia Tech 4-13 13-17

In addition to Miami/Clemson and Duke/North Carolina, key games to keep an eye on include Virginia vs. Maryland and North Carolina State hitting the road to take on Florida State. These could both have a big impact on the NCAA Tournament picture and the teams fighting for an at-large bid.
