New Mexico vs. Air Force final score: Falcons stun Lobos on last-second shot, 89-88

A Todd Fletcher three-pointer with three seconds left gave Air Force an upset victory over New Mexico.

USA TODAY Sports

The Air Force Falcons found some late-game magic, upsetting the New Mexico Lobos, 89-88, in their regular season finale thanks to a last-second score.

Air Force hung with the 12th-ranked Lobos for the entire game, and both teams went into halftime tied 47-47. In the second half, neither team held a lead larger than four points until the six-minute mark. New Mexico appeared to put the game away then, holding a 80-73 lead, but the Falcons came storming back. Michael Lyons was the big hero for Air Force, scoring 11 points in the final six minutes. After a series of free throws, Todd Fletcher hit a three-pointer with three seconds left to seal the victory for the Falcons.

Lyons had a memorable performance, and finished with 30 points, four rebounds and five assists. Fletcher scored 21 points, in addition to the game-winning shot.

No defense was allowed in this game, as Air Force made 56.4 percent of its field goals, with New Mexico scoring at a 58.6 percent clip. There were also a combined 30 three-pointers.

Despite the loss, New Mexico is still in good position for a high seed in the NCAA tournament. Air Force probably isn’t going dancing, but this game proves that they shouldn’t be taken lightly in the MWC tourney.
