Butler’s Brad Stevens will not sign contract without ‘out’ clause

Butler head coach Brad Stevens went on the Dan Patrick Show Monday morning to say he would never agree to a coaching position that didn’t allow him to explore other job opportunities if the university leadership changed.

Reports surfaced last week that UCLA was nearing a deal with Stevens for their vacant coaching position, but Stevens declined to comment on the rumors. The Bruins went on to hire Steve Alford out of New Mexico. Stevens stated that he would never go to another school as long as athletic director Barry Collier remained in charge:

”The thing that would scare you, if you’re in a coach’s shoes, is turnover with the people that believe in you. Because then you don’t know if you’re going to ultimately have somebody that’s hired that has their own agenda or own things in mind. And I don’t blame people who have that.

Stevens signed a 12-year extension with Butler shortly after taking the Bulldogs to the national championship game in 2010.
